You don’t need to travel to Alaska to see bald eagles. They’re right here in Cuyahoga Heights in the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation along the Cuyahoga River and historic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Bald eagles begin nesting in December or January. It is at this time that they start visiting the nest, adding sticks and other materials, and showing courtship behaviors like preening each other. Over the course of a few days in February or March, the female will lay 1 to 3 white eggs. The parents will take turns incubating for 35 days. When the chicks hatch, they’re small, white and fuzzy, and completely dependent on their parents for everything. The parents will hunt in turns, feeding the hungry chicks an array of fish and small mammals. The Cuyahoga Valley, with expansive secluded wooded wetlands and rebounding fish populations, has become an ideal place for eagles to feed and nest. So get out there and walk the trails. It’s a thrilling experience to see one of these magnificent, iconic birds.
