Santa Visits Children

Santa, Mrs. Claus and their helpers visited the children in our community on Sunday, December 20, 2009. They visited newborn babies; other children were a mixture of ages, the oldest being 12 years of age. Santa’s sleigh departed the Village Hall with the goodies at precisely 11:00 a.m. and visited those children that were home that day. It was a chilly and blistery day, and only a slight coating of snow had fallen on the ground. It was such a joy to see the children’s faces light up as Santa and Mrs. Claus approached their homes.

Dedication Ceremony of the New Monumental Sign

On September 25, 2009, Cuyahoga Heights Village officials, residents and friends came together for a dedication ceremony of the new monumental sign; located at the East 71st Street and Route 21 exit ramp in the Village.  Over 100 individuals turned out that evening for the event.

Angelo Bertolone, music teacher from Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School played the electric piano while several of his 4th and 5th grade students sang various patriotic songs during the raising of the flags.  Veteran Vic Duber raised the American Flag, Anne Aguzzi and Felicia Piasecki raised the Ohio flag and Tyler Hughes raised the Village flag.  In addition, the Beautification Committee was on hand to cut the ribbon for the dedication ceremony.

Mayor Jack Bacci thanked everyone for attending the event, as well as the Village Council and administration for being supportive with the project.  He acknowledged, “When we started this project, three words came to mind…pride, commitment and ownership.  Pride which is a personal commitment, it’s an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity; ownership is human instinct, and our Village will have a new sense of ownership in itself.”  He finished by stating, “This monument is dedicated to the people of the Village of Cuyahoga Heights; past, present and future, insuring a long-time sense of pride and ownership revisited today and into the future.”

Hamburgers and hot dogs were provided by the organization; members brought side dishes or desserts to complete the meal. As usual, the homemade items were “out of this world.” Everyone had a great time and it was a perfect day for a picnic.

Scouts Raking Leaves

On Saturday, November 8, Cuyahoga Heights Boy Scout Troop#28 and Brownie Troop #929 raked the yards of thirteen of our village senior citizens who qualified to have their leaves raked. To qualify for the program, the individual needed to be 65 years of age and older and reside alone or with a spouse of like age or older.  In addition, the household does not have any able-bodied person(s) less than 65 years of age living with them.

The weather held up for the troops as the rain held off until laterthat evening.  In addition to the boys and girls from Troops #28 and #929 there were several adults on hand that helped.  Thank you to Mayor Jack Bacci,Councilman Frank Schoeffler, Brownie Troop #929 Leader Heather Davis,Wendy Santiago, Lee Ann Schoeffler, Jennifer Spears, Erin Spicer and Sandy Sturgill who donated their time and helped raked leaves with the kids.  After the group was done raking, Mayor Bacci treated the kids to pizza and pop back at the Village Hall.

Charter Amendments for the November 2008 ballot

At the August Council meeting, the Village Council passed five charter amendments that will be on the November ballot for you the residents to consider.  During recent months the Charter Review committee examined our charter and made the following recommendations to Council.

  1. 1)      Provide four year terms for the Mayor and Clerk.  The committee stated that the office of Mayor and Clerk are significant positions in the daily operations of the Village. Each position requires adequate time to implement and administer the Village’s day-to-day and financial operations as well as long-term planning.

  2. 2)      Provide four year terms for Treasurer and four year staggered terms for the members of Council.  The committee stated that members of Council face issues that extend beyond their two year terms and a longer term will allow them to become better educated on the issues and provide the best solution possible.

  3. 3)      Provide qualifications for the Clerk and provisions for filling a vacancy in the office during the term of office.  The amendment will require the Clerk to have a minimum two (2) year degree in accounting, finance, or business administration from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two (2) years of recent and relevant business experience.  If a vacancy occurs with the term of office, the Mayor will appoint, with the approval of Council, a qualified Village resident.  If a qualified village resident is unable to be appointed, the Mayor, with approval of Council, shall hire a person to the position of Finance Director who possessed the qualifications and shall perform the duties of Clerk for the remainder of the unexpired term of the vacant office of Clerk.  The committee felt that it is in the best interest of the Village and its residents that a minimum education requirement exists for the position.

  4. 4)      Provide a method to fill a vacancy on council.  If a vacancy occurs on Council during the term, the amendment will allow for that position to be filled by appointing the unsuccessful candidate who received the next highest vote total for Council at the most recent regular municipal election.  That candidate must still be eligible and is willing to accept the appointment.

  5. 5)      Provide for a two-year residency requirement for the Elective officers of the Village.  Each elective officer shall be a qualified elector of the municipality and shall have resided in the municipality for a period of at least two (2) continuous years immediately preceding the date of election.  The committee recommended that a qualified elector should have knowledge of the community, the issues facing it, and a strong relationship with the residents.

All these ordinances will be posted for viewing on the Village’s website or a copy can be made available thru the Clerk’s office during normal business hours .  By law, all registered voters will be receiving a copy of the charter amendments by mail in the near future.

The Council wants to recognize all the hard work the Committee did and thank them for their recommendations.

DEER PROBLEMS
Please be careful driving on Bletch Court in the evening and early mornings as there has been a problem with deer.  The deer are coming up the hill and into the yards of residents who live on Bletch Court looking for food.  Even though some of us think they are beautiful creatures, please do not feed them, as they are becoming a nuisance damaging fences, lawns and shrubbery.  Hopefully, now that spring is just around the corner, the deer will stay together in the woods, as there is more food available for them.  Again, please be cautious and drive carefully on Bletch Court.
GRASS CUTTING FOR SENIOR CITIZENS
