The Beautification and Go Green committees of the Village of Cuyahoga Heights celebrated Arbor Day at Bacci Park. This special day is set aside for the planting of trees and is observed throughout our nation.
Of course, Mayor Jack Bacci was on hand to help plant and dedicate the Village’s first Arbor Day trees, along with Service Director Scott Waldemarson and Village Landscape aficionado Frank Domzalski. Other village officials in attendance were Clerk Barbara Biro, Councilwomen Marilyn Duszynski and Irma Schab. Several children recited poems about the meaning of Arbor Day. Committee members handed out free pine tree seedlings for residents to plant in their own yards in an effort to further carry out the “go green” and Arbor Day theme.
Over 100 residents and friends attended the ceremony and cheered loudly as the mayor took a plunge (fully clothed) into the fish pond after losing a wager to Council woman Henley. His challenge to Mrs. Henley was an attempt to increase Village attendance at this first Arbor Day celebration—she helped—he lost the bet and got wet!
In addition, several residents purchased trees which were planted that evening in memory of their departed loved ones. Trees were planted for: Former Mayor Lou Bacci, Louis “Gigi” Bacci, Eva Bowen, Dean & Noreen James, “Lil” John Krenisky, and Oliver Pallini.
Cuyahoga Heights will continue this tradition providing all residents the opportunity to purchase a tree through this program in honor of departed loved ones with the trees being planted annually on Arbor Day.
The Youth Committee planned an afternoon of bowling on Thursday, March 27, 2008 while the kids were on spring break. The village bus took several of the committee members and kids to Ptak’s Bowling Alley located at 4209 Harvard Avenue. The kids enjoyed an afternoon of bowling and fun with their friends.
The Village of Cuyahoga Heights held their Inauguration on Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the Hall’s auditorium which was standing room only. Cuyahoga Heights’ own Marisa Bacci and Jessica Munczenski sang the “National Anthem.” Pastor Shawn Vitu from the Valley View Village Church then gave a heartfelt Invocation. Garfield Heights Municipal Judge Jennifer Weiler administered the Oath of Office to Mayor Jack M. Bacci, son of the late Mayor Louis J. Bacci. Judge Weiler also had the honor of swearing in Clerk Barbara Biro and Treasurer John Traffis. Garfield Heights Municipal Judge Deborah Nicastro administered the Oath of Office to Council Members: Marilyn Duszynski, Ralph Faragone, Lois Henley, Irma Schab, Frank Schoeffler II and George Suhy. During the brief Council meeting, a Resolution approving the official bonds for the Village were approved. Ordinances appointing and prescribing the Law Director and the Prosecutor of the Village of Cuyahoga Heights, and Resolutions for general and salary payrolls and general bills were also approved. Irma Schab made a motion to nominate Marilyn Duszynski as Council President for 2008; it was seconded by Ralph Faragone with a unanimous vote by Council. Other dignitaries in attendance were Brooklyn Heights Mayor Michal Procuk and Newburgh Heights Mayor Derrick Kinder. Afterwards, residents, family and friends stood in the receiving line to congratulate the new Mayor. Appetizers and refreshments were served after the ceremony and everyone enjoyed themselves.
As tradition continues in the Village of Cuyahoga Heights, once again Santa Claus & Mrs. Claus took time off from their busy schedule at the North Pole to stop by the homes of Cuyahoga Heights Village children on Sunday, December 23, 2007. Children from 0 to 12 years of age waited patiently at their home for this special visit. The morning started off very bleak; gray skies and a lot of rain. However; as soon as Santa left the Village Hall to make his stops, the rain suddenly stopped……almost as if it was magic! While Santa and Mrs. Claus were visiting the children, Santa’s helpers picked up bags of food from our residents which were then donated to Project Hope in Brooklyn Heights. Thank you to everyone who donated food! Your kindness and generosity were very much appreciated to those who are less fortunate.
Leaf Raking Project
On Saturday, November, 10, 2007, the Boys & Girl Scouts, Jr. Scouts, Brownies, and Cub Scouts, gathered together on a bitter cold day to do a good deed for our Cuyahoga Heights senior citizens. The group had designated the day to rake leaves for our elderly residents who were in need of help with their leaves. We had a great turnout; there were so many scouts that showed up for the day!
It was also nice to see that many of the senior residents came out of their house to thank the boys and girls for working so hard on their lawns. In the end, it was well worth it, just to see them smile!
After the scouts were done raking, the adult leaders provided a luncheon at the Village Hall. Of course, we fed the scouts their favorite….pizza!
Again, thanks to all the scouts and adults who helped make this event a success! We are very proud of all the children who helped with this project.
Boy Scouts Attend Council Meeting
On Wednesday, October 10, 2007, Boy Scout Troop #28 attended a Village Council Meeting with their Scout Master, Ken Schoeffler and Assistant Scout Leader, Roylene Sample. The boys needed to attend a Council Meeting as part of a requirement for their Citizenship Badge. Mayor Contipelli introduced Troop #28 to the audience and had the boys lead off with the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Several of the boys were very impressed with the way our village government works; a few had shown interest in attending future meetings. Perhaps some day…..a few of them will be our future leaders?
DEER PROBLEMS
Please be careful driving on Bletch Court in the evening and early mornings as there has been a problem with deer. The deer are coming up the hill and into the yards of residents who live on Bletch Court looking for food. Even though some of us think they are beautiful creatures, please do not feed them, as they are becoming a nuisance damaging fences, lawns and shrubbery. Hopefully, now that spring is just around the corner, the deer will stay together in the woods, as there is more food available for them. Again, please be cautious and drive carefully on Bletch Court.
